ESSENDON will unleash a full-strength side against Adelaide in tomorrow night's season-opener with David Zaharakis and Michael Hurley both locked in the starting 18.

The Dons named Zaharakis on the half-forward line and Hurley at full-forward despite the pair carrying injuring troubles.

Zaharakis pulled on the boots for the first time last week, in a VFL practice match, six weeks after injuring his quad.

Hurley was seen sporting a moon boot after the NAB Cup thumping of GWS, but the Dons remained confident his ankle injury was minor.

The Bombers will also roll out marquee recruit Brendon Goddard and 22-year-old debutant Nick Kommer at AAMI Stadium.

The West Australian, who was given an AFL lifeline with pick No. 73 in last year's draft, has been named in a forward pocket after a solid NAB Cup campaign.

The long-haired Kommer played every pre-season match and was a WAFL star for East Perth last season.

But the Crows pulled a major selection surprise, overlooking gun youngster Brad Crouch.

The mini-draft graduate was seen as a certain Round 1 starter after playing every pre-season match, averaging 61 SuperCoach points, but he was named only as an emergency.

Former Bomber Josh Jenkins is set to replace Kurt Tippett and partner Taylor Walker in attack, while the Crows will also boast a formiddable line-up with only Brodie Smith unavailable.

Fremantle and West Coast will field weakened sides ahead of their stand-alone derby on Saturday.

Aaron Sandilands (hamstring) and Anthony Morabito (knee) have been ruled out for the Dockers and Nic Naitanui, Daniel Kerr, Sharrod Wellingham, Matt Rosa and Mark Nicoski all sidelined for the Eagles.

Mark Le Cras will play his first game since 2011, joining Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling in a stacked Eagles attack, while Scott Lycett will partner Dean Cox in the ruck.
