ENIGMATIC Sun Jared Brennan has revealed how a social basketball competition has helped nurture his love for football during the club's torturous pre-season.

Three months after he opened up about how he hated playing football last season, Brennan continues to take positive strides towards turning his career around in 2013.

But the 28-year-old has basketball to thank, with a three-month competition in the lead up to Christmas helping re-ignite his love for sports in general.

"To get that passion back I had to find out why I loved playing sport again,'' Brennan said.

"One of my mates rang me up and asked if I wanted to play basketball on a Wednesday night in Brisbane late last year and that was a turning point.''

It had been a decade since Brennan last played sport for fun. There were risks. If he suffered an injury it could jeopardise his AFL career but Brennan knew it was a gamble he had to take.

"Every one played just because they loved playing basketball,'' he said.

"There was nothing about expectations or coaches driving you or the big crowds and it was just going out there and having a shoot around and having some fun.

"I love basketball in general but to be able to go play sport just simply for fun and nothing else was really refreshing.

"It had been 10 years since I had done that and I had lost focus with what's important and why you are playing football.

"When I was 18, 19 I played because I loved playing football but I lost that somewhere along the way and playing basketball has helped me find that again.''

His new-found passion has translated onto the field this pre-season, with Brennan continuing to impress on the track since shocking the club's coaching staff with his work ethic in Arizona last November. And Brennan said a simple mind-set has helped keep him on track.

"I wanted to be in the top three trainers every training session I had,'' he said.

"I know I'm not going to be because I'm not in the three fittest guys here and I'm not in the top three strongest guys at the club either.

"But I thought if my effort was in the top three then I thought I would go OK.

"That has been the goal and I've been able to train pretty solidly, which has helped a lot as well.''

But Brennan is still making no guarantees. After being dropped twice last season, the former Lion admits he still has a long way to go to cement his spot back into the Suns' first-choice team.

"The love is definitely still there and I guess we will find out again in another month after the NAB Cup,'' he added.
