CARLTON superstar Chris Judd should relinquish the captaincy to focus on his game.

That's the opinion of teammate Brock McLean, who says the time has come for Judd to hand over the reins.

"I can only speak for myself, but personally I think it would be the best thing for Chris to focus on his footy," McLean said yesterday.

"He's probably the best player at the club. Personally I think he's best off focusing on his footy, but that's only my opinion."

Judd, 29, seems almost certain to step down after five years at the helm, as the Blues look to lighten his load.

McLean, 26, nominated Andrew Carrazzo and Marc Murphy as ideal replacements. Kade Simpson is also thought of as captaincy material, but defender Michael Jamison has pulled out of contention.

"Carrots (Carrazzo) is probably a little bit more experienced and bit older than Murph," McLean said.

"He's got a really good hold on things, and the way he talks to the group both in a positive manner and a demanding manner is something that we need.

"Marc Murphy, his best way of leading is leading by example and his performance the last two years when he has been out on the park have been pretty outstanding."

There is a growing belief Judd is ready to give up the captaincy, with new coach Mick Malthouse a long-time believer the dual Brownlow medallist is burdened with too much responsibility.

The Blues reported back for duty this week after a short rest following their Arizona high-altitude camp.

An energetic Malthouse yesterday threw himself into everything from running laps with rehabilitating players to kicking drills.

"I think everyone's pretty keen to prove themselves to Mick, and when a new coach comes in I think everyone starts from the same spot so reputations count for nothing," McLean said.

He said the players had noticed differences in Malthouse's methods compared with those of former coach Brett Ratten.

"I think we've done a lot more stuff out on the park rather than in the meeting room," McLean said.

"He's been very big on coming out and walking through it on the park, which has probably made it a little bit easier for the players to understand.

"Having a year out of the game has probably made his passion for coaching grow a bit. He's been really good, a breath of fresh air ... he's hands-on."
